William's father was James Childers and his mother was Mahala Scott. His paternal grandparents were Joshua Childers and Frances (Frankie) Crane; his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Mary (Polly) Scott. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Milton, Susan, Mary, Nancy, Martha, Elizabeth, Harriet and Ellen. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
