Jasper was born in November 1894 in , , Texas, USA.1 Jasper's father was James A. J. Butler and his mother was Sarah Jane Bishop. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Earl Bishop and Naomi Jane Shipley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John Lee, J. V., Wyite B., George Washington, Ralph C., Malinda A., Melvina and Sallie Ann. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
