Benjamin was born in August 1860 in Il. Benjamin's father was Emberson Bloyd and his mother was Charity Winn Bloyd. His maternal grandparents were Levi Bloyd and Barbara Winn\Wilson. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Levi Jefferson, Monroe D. and Sarah A.. He was the youngest of the five children.
