Janet was born about 1466 in Raith, Fifeshire, Scotland. Janet's father was John Bethune and her mother was Marjory Boswell. Her paternal grandparents were John Bethune and Katherine Stirling. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Andrew, James, Margaret, Elizabeth, Isabel and Grissel. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.-
