Robert was born about 1098 in Exeter, Devonshire, England.1 Robert's father was Ralph Avenal d'Avranches and his mother was Adelise FitzBaldwin de Meulles. His paternal grandparents were Lord of Oakhampton William Abrincis d'Avranches and Emma Crispin de Brionne; his maternal grandparents were Lord of Muelles Baldwin FitzGilbert and Albreda d'Avranches. He had two sisters named Alice and Maud. He was the youngest of the three children. He died after 1167 in Sandhurst, Gloucestershire, England.1 General Notes
