Hugh was born in 1197 in Ryhall, Stamford, Rutlandshire, England. Hugh's father was Thomas le Despenser 3 and his mother was Rohese Unknown 3. He was an only child. He died at the age of 41 in 1238 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England.
