His maternal grandparents were Rueloff or Rulof or Roelfe VandeCar and Sarah Reynolds. He had three brothers and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Horace, James, William, Charlotte, Jane, Ruth, Sarah and Alec or Alice.-
