Nicholas was born on May 22nd, 1853 in Nassagaweya township, Halton county, Ontario, Canada. Nicholas' father was Nicholas Norrish and his mother was Ann Youart. His paternal grandparents were Nicholas Norrish and Susannah Easterbrook. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John W, Nicholas F, John Youart, Amos, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Susana B.
