Melissa Jane was born on July 18th, 1838 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky.  Melissa Jane's father was William Withrow and her mother was Rebecca Litiral. She had five brothers and a sister, named Henry Meril, James White, Samuel Lemon, William Ward, Alfred Harvey and Susan Skot.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
