Possibly born in 1861.
Katherine (Cornelia?) Roels was married three times:
l. Jacob Filius
2. William Van Slooten
3. DeGroot.
There were no children by any marriage.
Kate was unhappy with her 3rd marriage. The story is that he married her for her money, but she had her Will re-written and left him $1.00 and willed everything else to her sister Dena Shipper. Before he died, DeGroot broke his leg and Kate couldn't take care of him, so she sent him to live with his daughters. He had a nice home for Kate, but did not want to spend the money to heat it and the house was cold and damp. Kate blamed her rheumatism on that. Evidently, she could really swear in Dutch! Some of the family called her "sur-kaus" which meant sauerkraut in Dutch. It was also said she would go over the "same old cheese". In other words, Jeanne Reis said, "She would keep going over and over the same stories and it got so tiresome."
