GYSBERT OPDYCK (1605-1721)
For a very interesting and informative history of Gysbert and his
ancestors one must read the "Updick Genealogy" by Charles Wilson Opdyke.
This volume has been microfilmed and can be found in the FHL in Salt Lake
City. In the US section of microfilms look for film # 1036485, item #6.
Gysbert spent most of his life in the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam and
at one time owned all of Coney Island. He was only superseded in power and
authority by the Governor of the settlement or colony as it may be called.
When the British overran the area Gysbert moved north to the settlement of
Rohde Island where lived his daughter and son-in-law, George Wightman.
