John died of a heart attack at his home. He had a military funeral at the cemetery in Holland, Michigan. There was a 21 gun salute. After the flag was flown, it was given to his eldest daughter Pat. She returned it to the Veterans so it could be flown the following Memorial Day with about 200 other flags. It had his name on it.
John Kalkman was a cement finisher in Holland.
