"Thomas Newberry, on of the earliest settlers and largest landed proprietors of
Dorchester, MA rec'd from the Gen. Court a grant of 100 acres in Neponset, Mar
1634, and many grants from the Dorchester proprietary.
Will dated 12 Dec 1635; gave wife 200 pounds, and constituted her sole
executrix and the rest of his estate to his children. The inv. included land
in England.
NEWBERRY family from co.Devon, Eng; Tradition says that 2 brothers of Thomas
the Emigrant, who remained in Eng. had been members of Cromwell's famous
Thousand Dragoons, in 1641/2; Hon. J.Hammond Trumbull of Hartford, found some
old letters of the family pasted in the cover of an old book in which mention
was made of an "Uncle, or Capt. Newberry, living in Norchard, now Narchard
Bishop, 15 miles from Exeter, in Devon." A great deal of weaving is said to
have been carried on at this place, and it is said that John of Newberry
discovered the art. The weaver's flag used in the Trades' processions in the
west of England on festive occasions, bore for its emblem the picture of John
of Newberry weaving on a loom. The Wool-combers' flag had as its emblem the
picture of Bishop Blaise, in cononicals, with a wool-combe in his left hand and
the Bible in his right.
According to tradition also, its related that in an early day, one William of
Newberry was the chronicler of his District, and that he was a wise and learned
man, and that at the date of the adopting of surnames, he was granted
the distinguished honor of taking his name as the town's, and he
thereupon became William Newberry, and thus est. a family and from it
has descended the Eng. and Am. family of that name.

THOMAS NEWBERRY laid out a large farm in Squantum, and built a house there.
He resided on "The Rock" in 1634, where he became freeman and selectman; 1635
appointed to oversee works at the Castle; was early engaged in the Conn.
enterprise; sold his Dorchester propery and prepared to rem. to Windsor, but
his death, either in Dec 1635 or Jan 1636, prevented this. His widow Jane and
children rem. to Windsor prior 1639/40. Rev. Warham & Mr. William Gaylor were
made overseers of his will. The record of Particular Court, CT 5 Mar 1639,
says: "This present day, there was returned into the Court, by Mr. Gaylord, one
of the overseers, a copy of the estate of the children of Thomas Newberry,
Dec'd, dated 10 Feb 1639, subscribed by Mr. Ludlow, Mr.Phelps, Mr Huit, Mr
Hill, George Hull and William Hosford."
More than 30 yrs. after his deth, 6 Feb.1669, his heirs, represented his
sons-in-law, Mr. Henry Wolcott, Jr and Mr. Daniel Clark, and by his son, Capt.
Benjamin Newberry presented to the Court "The ancient grant of land to their
father, which would have fallen to him in Windsor in meadow lyn (in proportion
to) the estate of his which was brought up (from Eng., for the amounts which
they had severally expended in this venture of settlement in a new country)
which, by account of 700 lbs, and his person would have come to 76 acres, and
he had bur 40 acres of meadow, and it was granted him in Dorchester (before
they left D.) that what was his part in meadow above 40 acres, he should have
it made up to him in a farm in outland." In accordance with a previous vote of
the town made in 1662, that Capt. Benj. Newberry and his relations should have
his father's ancient rights, the court ordered that the petitioners shoul have
200 acres in west lands in Windsor.
The children of Mr. Thomas Bewberry, being well descended, possessed of ample
means, and becoming counted by marriage with some of the first families of
Windsor, naturally assumed an honorably prominent position in the Conn.Colony.
