Samuel Stone:
Reverend Samuel Stone was a non-conformist divine of Herfordshire, England. He was educated at Emanuel College, Cambridge and a lecturer in Towcester, Northamptonshire. He was assistant to Mr. Hooker, came with him to America 4 Sep 1633 and settled in Cambridge. He was a proprietor in Cambridge in 1633, and a freeman 14 May 1634. Removed to Hartford, Connecticut 1636. Early member of First Congressional Church of Hartford. Pastor of First Congressional Church of Hartford. His name is on the Founders Monument. Born in Hereford, England he entered Emmanuel COllege, Cambridge 1620. Probably curate at Stisted, Essex, England near Chelmsford from 13 Jun 1627 to 13 Sep 1630. Came with Colton, Hooker and others in the ship "Griffin" arriving in Boston 4 Sep 1633. Chosen teacher of the church at Cambridge 11 Oct 1633. He served as chaplain to the troops under Captain Mason in the Pequot War in 1637. His estate inventory was valued at 563 pounds.[3104.ftw]

entered at Emmanuel College, Cambridge 1620; A.B. 1623; Asu 1627. Recent discoveries show that a Samuel Stone probably this one was curate at Stisted, co. Essex near Chelmsford from 13 Jun 1627 to 13 Sep 1630. He came to New England with Colton, Hooker and other men of note in the "Griffin", arr. Boston 4 Sep 1633; chosen Teacher of the Church at
Cambridge 11 oct 1633; freeman MA 14 May 1634; rem. to Hartford 1636, where he was an original proprietor, and in 1639 his home lot was on the north bank of Little River, bet. Rev. Thomas Hooker and Elder Wm. Goodwin. He served as chaplain to the troops under Capt. Mason in the Pequot War 1637. His wife d. bef. Nov.3 1640 when Mr. Hooker mentions her death in a letter to Rev. T. Shepard, saying that she "smonked out her days in the darkness of melancholy". After Mr. Hooker's death, he was sole pastor of the First Church until his death. Inv. 563/01/00
