George Haworth was a linen weaver and farmer. He came from Liverpool, England in 1699 on the "Brittania" when he was about 18 with William Penn and a large number of Quakers seeking religious freedom. Fourteen weeks were required to make the trip. The ship was so overcrowded with passengers that the supply of food and water was entirely inadequate. The heat was intense, which added to the suffering. Fifty-six of the passengers died at sea, twent more after they reached the shore. Among the dead were George Haworth's sister, her husband and their new-born baby. George was very ill, but survived. Upon landing America, he went to his sister, Mary, in Harbills, Maryland, to recover. A week later he went to Bucks County, PA, to the home of his cousin, James, to continue his recovery. In 1702, he bought 450 acres near Cottage Hill, near that of his cousin, in the northern corner of Buckingham Township, Bucks County, PA.
