Obituary Notice June 24, 1875 SENTINEL
In Williamsfield , Ohio , June 9th , BARTLETT LEONARD , in the 88th year of his age .
Mr. Leonard was a native of Worthington, Mass..born May 17,1788 and died June 9th,1875, being in his 88th year. He recieved a common school education and commenced teaching in the State of New York , where he was engaged at the beginning of the War of 1812. He enlisted in the army and went with his company to the frontier, was at the battle of Queenston . He was Clerk in the Company, and made out a list of the killed , wounded and missing, which reports were sent to headquarters at Albany, near which place he became disabled and was relieved from active service. He has recieved a pension for the last 5 years. Mr. L, with his wife and fathers family came and settled here in 1816 and early identified himself withall the improvements of the town and particularly in the education of the youth. He taught school several terms and held some important offices discharging his duties creditably to himself and satisfactorily to his employers.
He was a member and an earnest worker in the first M.E.Church at the Center until the slavery question caused a division of the members and a new church was formed, called Congregational, with which he united and contributed much towards it's building and support.
He took a very active part in the Anti-Slavery movement and lived to see his most earnest desires gratified--the stain blotted out--- and the flag of uor Union wave over a nation of freemen.
He died on the farm where he first settled, cared for by his
grand-son Mr. Lucius Phelps.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BOOK "ASHTABULA COUNTY HISTORY
WILLIAMSFIELD--" The exact date that the Bartlett Leonard family came is not known, but they located on the Old Salt Road at the top of the hill. Mr. Leonard, a carpenter, brought a sawmill with him from Mass and as his 9 sons and 1 daughter got their own land, he helped build their homes. One of those homes is still being used as the former Dale Bush property on Old Salt Road, believed to be the original Marvin Leonard home. Mrs. Fred Case remembered that a frame house was built at the top of that hill and her grandmother Charlotte Leonard moved when she was 6 into the frame house from the log cabin. The house was once used as a stage stop and for many years had numbers on it's upstairs doors."
Williamsfield was organized in 1826
