[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 22, Ed. 1, Tree #2589, Date of Import: Dec 1, 1998]
Deathdate September 30, 1840 or according to Oak Hill cemetery records he died September 13, 1841. His tombstone indicates he was amember of the
Masonic Lodge.
Judge Phelps on marrying, settled in Palmyra, NY where he was Judge of Probate about 1815. He moved to Canandiagua, NY. All his children were born in Palmyra except the youngest, Charles, who was born in Canandiagua. He was well acquainted with some of the Indian chiefs in New York and was a personal friend of Red Jacket.
Judge Phelps moved to Sangamon County, Illinois and was a farmer, but lost money and traded the land for lots in the village of Lewistown.
Stephen Phelps (Judge) moved to Lewistown, Illinois with his five sons about 1824 and opened a store with a small stock of goods. The first store "S. Phelps and Son" was in a small room and the jail was used for storage - there were no criminals. His son, Myron, was his partner. Myron remained in Lewistown and sons Alexis, Sumner and William went to Yellow Banks (Oquawka) on the Mississippi. Much of their business was with the Indians. The yournest son, William, was especially successful. He bought pelts to take to St. Louis to sell - first by canoe and later by a river boat. He thus attained his title of Captain.
In Lewistown, Stephen Phelps was a merchant and noted hotel keeper. He died in Lewistown. (Date of death was either September 30, 1840 or September 13, 1841). Upon his death, the business descended to his son Myron. It later came into the hands of his son Henry who took his brother-in-law, Charles Proctor, into a partnership. Charles Proctor eventually purchased the Henry Phelps interest in the business and continued to operate it until about 1922 when the business was sold to Joseph Szold and Son of Peoria, Illinois.
One source said there was a daughter, Louisa who was born in Canandiagua, New York and married twice - 1. ____Warner 2. William Proctor.
