from Lowndes Co Hist. Society, Valdosta GA 31601 3 Nov 1975:
Moses Smith resided at Troupville and later moved to Valdosta when Valdosta was started on land near railroad. He was associated in business with Capt W. H. Briggs at one time. Bapt. Briggs was the son of Dr. Henry Briggs & Catherine (Converse) Briggs. Capt. Briggs was a half-brother to Albert Converse, whose son Albert, was the first white child born in Valdosta. The Smith-Briggs lots at the Valdosta Cemetary, Sunset Hill, adjoin one another. Capt Briggs had an infant son who died, who was named Moses Briggs, named for Moses Smith. The Ashley lot is very near those of Briggs-Smith families.
Res. 12 miles from Thomasville GA; had 1,000 acres pineland; accused of barn burning.
