Harrie Edwin Fierce was born November 14, 1885, in Castana, Iowa. He was one of 7 children, and one of the three who lived. Two babies were
stillborn, and two, Frederick and Mina, lived for two years. So Harrie, Howard, and Florence were the only ones who lived. He graduated from high school in Castana and moved with his father and mother to a farm near Wyndmere, North Dakota.
It was here he met and married Mary Ethel Duffy, December 3l, l907.
They lived on the farm, which was a new experience for the new wife. Here their first son, Francis Myron, was born September 27, 1908.
Mary Elmore was born September 10, 19l0, and Knowlton Edward October
7, 1912 on the ranch. Fredrick Sterling was born in Missoula, August 23,
1916.
Harrie had been a baseball player in his youth. He had wanted to be a house painter, but was color blind, so had to give that up. But he loved the farm - the cycle of the seasons never lost its fascination. From earl spring, with the planting of the crops, the birth of calves, lambs, colts, little pigs and baby chicks, to the harvesting, he worked hard, but did not resent it. One thing he did say - that he wished things were easier on the money side.
He is remembered as beieng rather quiet, but he enjoyed company, and
a good laugh.
He loved cars, and even when he really could not afford one, he bought a new one. For a long time, the family did not have running water or a bathroom in the house. But one day when Ethel came home and found a shiny new Packard coupe parked by the back gate, she expressed herself explicitly, and by next day, work on a septic system and indoor plumbing was proceeding rapidly.
Also, he was very interessted in Knowlton's race horses and got a lot of pleasure out of trips to Winnipeg and Calgary when racing was on
there.
When he was about 50, he began to have heart trouble, and was supposed to take it easy. He had to get back to hard work during W.W.II
because Fred was in the service, and help was hard to find. So one day, he was grinding hay, reached down to pick up the belt from the tractor, toppled to the ground, and was gone.
He would havae hated old age. Already he resented his snow white hair, and the fact that he needed glasses to read.
