Obituary in the Bates County Democrat, May 10, 1928:
James T. Cauthon
James Thomas Cauthon, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Cauthon, was born in St. Clair county, Missouri, March 18, 1848, passed away at his home in Shawnee township, Bates county, Mo., Wednesday morning, May 2, 1928, being at the time of his death 80 years one month and 14 days of age.
He was united in marriage to Malisa Palestine Todd, March 6, 1870 and to this union was born ten children, five sons and five daughters, four having preceded him into the great beyond.
Besides his bereaved companion he is survived by the following children: J.W. Cauthon of Butler, Mo.; Mrs. Walter Greer, Butler, Mo.; J.F. Cauthon, Dayton, Mo.; Mrs. C.P. Kindrick, Altona, Mo.; Mrs. Sadie Bridges, Elkhart, Mo. and Albert Cauthon of Butler, Mo.
Besides his immediate family he leaves 39 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and a host of relatives and friends.
When but a young man he was converted and united with the Baptist Church and lived a Christian life until his death.
He was deeply devoted to his home and family. His life has been long and useful. His days have been full of care. His friends and loved ones now miss him, "For there is a vacant chair. As life's evening sun was setting Death's shadow fell o'er his way. Then he quietly lay down his burden and silently slipped away. His sorrows and troubles are ended. Life's pathway no more he will roam. He has gone to meet his Creator. He has reached his Eternal home."
Funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday afternoon, May 3, 1928, at 1:30 o'clock by Rev. L.W. Keele, of Butler and the body laid to rest in the Austin, Mo., cemetery.
