Smead Family

William Smead was of Welsh descent and was the first male ancestor in this country of all the early generations bearing that name. (Sheldon's History of Deerfield). He was an infant when brought to Dorchester, MA in 1635 by his mother, a widow, Judith Stoughton Smead.
Judith Stoughton Smead lived only a short time after coming here, dying in 1639. She joined the church at Dorchester in 1636 and had 20 acres of land granted her below the burying ground in Dorchester, in 1638. Mr. Isreal Stoughton was her administrator.
William was brought up by John Pope, who in his will called him little boy, gave him looms and tackling of them, to the value of 3lbs. provided he would live with his wife after his (John Pope) time was out, and willing to learn his trade. This was in 1646.
Judith Smead's property was afterward sold to her nephew William Stoughton, 1st Cheif Justice of MA in days of William & Mary, and afterward Lt. Governor. He was a graduate of Harvard.
William Smead married 12-31-1658 Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Lawrence and was freeman in 1680 at Northampton, whither he removed about 1660.
Oath of Allegiance Administered by Worshipful Major Pynchon 2-8-1678.
