(Captain) John I Butterfield was born in Chelmsford; January 12, 1698 (VR) only son of Benjamin and Sarah.

Married: December 10, 1721 (VR) in Chelmsford, to ANna Hildreth, "his second cousin in one line and first cousin in the other." (Transc. 71:86) Anna died in 1784; Buried February 24. (VR)

He was a member of a snowshoe company in Chelmsford in 1724 during "Lovewell's War", under the command of Capt. Robert Richardson and Capt. Joseph Parker. (History of Chelmsford)

In January 1728/29 he purchased a large portion of the land of the trapper, Brenton, in Naticook (Litchfield, New Hampshire). He was one of the original proprietors to start to settle this land in addition to holding his Chelmsford property. (Gordon)

In 1737 he received from Governor Jonathan Belcher a commission as Captain of a Troop of horse in the Mdx. ( ) Regiment-- the first troop in Cilonel Tyng's Regiment. (Text of Commission on page 155 in History of Chelmsford). John Butterfield is also on Parish Tax List of Hollis, NH, 1740. (NEH & GR 28:56)

In 1750 Captain John is listed as owning 40 acres of the "Wamesit" land in Chelmsford, some very desirable property. He is also listed as one of the town's residents who owned negro slaves.

On March 24, 1763 he divided his Chelmsford lands between two of his sons: Ephriam and Benjamin, reserving life interest. Upon his death Ephriam and Benjamin promply sold this land to Thomas Fletcher. (Mdx. Deeds, 1XX 478)
