SEVENTH GENERATION
Albert Brown Chandler [7] (Electa Owen [6], Joel [5], Caleb [4], Caleb [3], Joseph [2], John [1]), son of William and Wlecta (Owen) Chandler, was the youngest of thirteen children. He was born at West Randolph, Orange County, VT, August 20, 1840. Through his father he was descended from William Chandler, who came to Roxbury, MA, in 1637. He attended the public school and the Academy at West Randolph. Before leaving school he worked in a printing office. At sixteen he learned the art of telegraphy. In 1858 he went to Cleveland and entered the services of the Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1859 he received a position in the office of the superintendent of the Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad Company. On June 1, 1863, he became a cipher operator in the War Department in Washington, D.C. A lettle later he became disbursing clerk to General Thomas E. Eckert, Supt. of the U.S. Military Telegraph. This position brought him into direct contact with President Lincoln and other prominent officials.
In August 1866 he became chief clerk in the office of the General Superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph Company in New York City. He had charge of all trans-atlantic cable traffic. In 1869 he became a district superintendent of the company.
In 1875 he joined the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company and from 1879 to 1882 he served as its president, until it was merged with Western Union. Grom 1886 till 1901 he was president of the Postal Telegraph Company. He had other business interests; he was general manager of the New York Quotation Company, which furnished stock quotations by wire to members of the Stock Exchange. For several years, 1897 and later, he was president of the Sprage Electric Company, parent of the Otis Elevator Company. He died.
He maintained a fine home in New York City and a summer home, "Mari-Castle," at West Randolph, Orange County, VT.
He married October 11, 1864 Marilla Eunice Stedman of West Randolph. They had Three Children - 1) Florence, died 1867-1870.
