Hugh Smith (1750-1823) came from Ireland at the time of the American Revolutionary War, and saw service on the American side. He married about 1784 Elizabeth McCormick, (1764-1822) daughter of Samuel McCormick (1726-1803) and Elizabeth Bowman (1727-1811). Samuel was an active member and elder of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. There the children of Hugh and Elizabeth Smith were born. Among them James, a clergyman, born in 1793, and Samuel Jr., farmer (1790-1856) who married in 1820 Ruth Duncan (1800-1855) a daughter of David Duncan (traditionally a descendant of the Scotch King Duncan I ) and Letitia Anderson who were married at Carlisle, Penn in 1793. David's parents were William Duncan, who came from Scotland the latter part of the 17th century, and Mary Albert, whose parents Francis Albert and Susanna Schreyack migrated from Germany before the Revolution.
