Warden of Church of St.Marys, Ilchester, Somerset Co 1622. a Tailor.
Learned Indian Language. died early spring during Indian War. Settled Hingham, MA 24 Jun 1635. Went to Providence RI 20 Apr 1636/7 with Roger Williams. Signed the 1st Deed. Employed by the United Colonies in negotiations with the Narragansetts. This act of submission ot MA while it rendered them popular with that Government, gave great offence against them arising from this circumstance, were removed by their withdrawing themselves from the government of MA, and they, William and Benedict, were elected to public offices in the colony. Benedict was one of the patentees named in the Charter of Charles 2nd to the colony of RI and Providence Plantations in 1663. Helped to found 1st
Babtist Church with Roger Williams & William Carpenter.

Genealogies of Rhode Island Familes vol.I,p.13:"On 24 Jun 1635, there arrivged in Mass Bau a group of neighbors, nearly all related, either by blood or marriage. They sailed from Dartmouth, co.Devon, Eng. 1 May 1635, all but one of the party, William Carpenter, coming from Ilchester, co.Somerset. The leader of that Party was William Arnold whose 84th birthday was the day of their arrival. His oldest son Benedict one of the party, a lad 19 years to that time, has given us the only account that we have of their embarkation, in his own family record, written prob. soon after his removal to Newport, RI in 1651.
Also on board the ship that arr. 24 Jun 1635 were Thomas (19) & Frances (21) Hopkins, children of William and Joane (Arnold) Hopkins; William Man, husband of Frances Hopkins. William Carpenter, s. of Richard Carpenter of Amesbury, co.Wilts, husband of Elizabeth Arnold.
