John was born about 1626 in of Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.1   John's father was Nathaniel Woodward and his mother was Margaret Jackson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Ezekiel, Robert, Nathaniel, Prudence and Frances.  He was the second oldest of the six children.1
