His paternal grandparents were David Woodson and Hannah Unknown. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Horatio Nelson, Otis Calvin, Obadiah, Filo White, George David, Anne Maria, Margaret Hannah, Mary Louise and Florence Harkness.
