John was born in 1697 in Henrico Co., Va..1   John's father was Richard Woodson and his mother was Ann Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Woodson and Elizabeth Ferris; his maternal grandfather was Obadiah Smith. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Obadiah, Elizabeth, Judith, Mary and Agnes.1
