Roy's father was John Woods and his mother was Anna Belle Durden.  His maternal grandparents were Nathan Durden and Anna Elizabeth Hatcher. He had two brothers named John Toby and Lewis. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Ralph, Hoke, Ann Elizabeth, Gladys Jewel, Maggie Lucile and Marge.
