    Major Simon Willard, elder of the 2 brothers who founded the Am. Willard
  family.  His father provided that he should be apprenticed to learn some trade
  or business.  it is probable that he had served in the army before coming to
  N.E. as he was appointed to drill soldiers very soon after his arrival and
  called "a Kentish soldier".  He would seem to have m. in England, but no record
  of wedding has been found, possibly m. Mary Sharpe, dau. of Henry and Jane
  Feylde Sharpe of Horsmonder,..that she came with him to this country and was
  the mother of at least one child before coming and was the mother of several
  afterwards.; he m. 2) Elizabeth Dunster, sister of President Henry Dunster, of
  Harvard College who d. within a year, and m. 3) Mary Dunster, cousin of
  Elizabeth, who survived him.  Mary Dunster, dau. of Robert and Mery Gerrett
  Dunster, bp. Bury, co.Lancashire, ENG 15 Dec 1630.
    Simon came to his county in May 1634, whether his family were with him or not
  is not clear.4 Aug 1634 he had a grant of land at Cambridge where he resided
  for a year; and that then 25 Aug 1635, he sold that and joined others in
  founding Concord plantation.
    They bought their lands of the Indians in 1636 and maintained good relations
  with them for long years.  Major Willard was chosen rep. to the Gen. Court by
  the Concord freeman at their first election, in 1636; was appointed to train
  the military company at once; continued in the Gen. Court, performing eminent
  services on committees and other ways....
    Was involved in King Philip's War..the following month he was at Charlestown,
  probably resting awhile from his tremendous labors, when he was seized with an
  "epidemic cold" and d.24 Apr 1676, having just passed his 71st birthday.  He
  was prob. buried there.
    An inventory of the large estate was filed a year later.  No will found.  The
  widow struggled to care for the younger children and had a difficult problem;
  for while the Major had left great landed possessions, there was very little
  ready money.  Her 2nd m. probably lightened her labors, and the children became
  self-supporting in due time.  She m. 14 Jun 1680 Dea. Joseph Noyes of Sudbury
  and d.28 Dec 1715, 85 yrs of age.
    By his 1st and 3rd wives, it is believed he had 17 children.
