Malden's father was Joseph Maybrey Willard and his mother was May Hutchison.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Maybrey Willard and Melissa Elizabeth Prickett. He had two brothers and a sister, named Marvin, Oren Leslie and Bessie Pearl. He had seven half-brothers and a half-sister, named Joseph Maybrey, Charles Lee, Chester White, Edward Harry, Elmer Thomas, Leon Clay, William Henry and Lillie Pearl.
