James was born in 1686.1   James' father was Eleazer Whipple and his mother was Alice Angell.  His paternal grandparents were John Whipple and Sarah Hutchinson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Job, Daniel, Eleazer, Deborah, Alice, Margaret, Elizabeth and Harriet.1
