John E. was born in 1836.1   John E.'s father was Tobias Turner and his mother was Sarah Turner. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Lawrence, John Ferdenand, Cecilia E. M., Sarah Ella and Virginia Anna.  He was the oldest of the six children.1
