1   Alexander's father was John Strain and his mother was Miriam Strayhorn.  His maternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan. He had five brothers and three sisters, named David, Gilbert, James, Samuel, William, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary.1
