John R. was born on February 19th, 1835 in Allegany, MD.1 John R.'s father was Samuel Pottinger Smith and his mother was Catherine Sapp. His maternal grandparents were John Sapp and John Sapp. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George W., Henry A., Jesse W., Thomas H., Sarah B., Jemima, Catherine J. and Annetta L.. He was the second oldest of the nine children.1 -
