  James Purdy Smith (1824-1909) married in 1850 Drusilla Bailhache (1831-1895) daughter of Nicholas Bailhache and Ruth Hurst.
  
  The first known Bailhache was Jean de Baille Hache, one of William the Conqueeror's lieutenants who was with him at the battle of Hastings (1066) and returned with him to Normandy when William went back to defend his dukedom.  Jean is interred in the same chapel at Caen where William is interred.  Some of Jean's descendants moved to Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, at the time of the Huguenot Persecution, where they owned an estate in the parish of St. Ouen at the westernmost part of the island.  At least some of them engaged in commerce, owning vessels and doing some privateering on the side, during the 17th century, according to Jersey history.  John Bailhache, who gave a great deal of Bailhache history, had his line traced back to Jean, and said he was the 27th John Bailhache.
  
  However, the record of that search has disappeared from John's records, much to the displeasure of his son Preston.  Therefore, we are unable to go farther back than one John Bailhache, the grandfather of the two Bailhache immigrants, who was born in 1715 and died in 1807.
