Chileab Smith 
Chileab was born about 1635 in Watertown, MA.1 Chileab's father was Samuel Smith and his mother was Elizabeth Chileab. His paternal grandparents were S. Smith and Mumforde. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Phillip, John, Samuel, Mary and Elizabeth. He died in Hadley, MA.2 General Notes

betw. North Highway and Joseph Baldwin on 8 acres; estate valued 100 pounds;
was added to list of proprietors beford Mar 1663. In the Grammar School vs.
Eng. school issue 1686, he supported the Grammar Scool, the minority opinion of
the town...8 Jun 1687, when the Gen. Court ruled in favor of the Grammar
School, he became a member of the committee taking the place of Samuel
Partridge who was removed for it. Mar 1678, he was chosen by the Hadley
selectmen to be one of the first tithingmen. They were to inspect the conduct
of liquorsellers, Sabbath-breakers, night-walkers, tipplers, etc. and present
the names of the disorderly to a magistrate. He ws chosen 27 Jan 1663 to be
surveyor of Highways for the east side. Signed the petition against the
customs 1669, for east side.
Signed 1672 request for enlargement of Hadley township
Rated 26/2 for building of Ft.River Bridge in 1681, residing west side of main
street, south of middle highway.
Rate for 1686 Hadley Town dept was 32/5.
1692 made ensign in Trainband.
Buried in Hadley Burying Ground
Apr 1703;in div.of wood lots; rec.39 rods,10ft.(at 60 acres)
25 Jan 1720,land south of Mount Holyoke was divided; Ens.Chileab Smith let his
sons draw his shares as he was old.
2 Dec 1714 chosen to seat persons in meeting-house
