James Smalley, called Captain, b. 10-28-1707 at Truro, MA, removed to Lebanon, CT. age 5, with parents. He returned to Barnstable Co. when a yound man and M. 10-2-1729, at Truro, Hannah Bickford, b. 5-1798, Eastham, dughter of Jeremiah & Hannah Young Bickford of Truro. They resided at Truro, several years after their marriage and were admitted members of the church 12-26-1731. The church records mention the baptism of three daughters born in Truro or vicinity. On 6-27-1733 James Smalley is called of Provencetown in a deed recorded at Lebanon. He may have resided at Truro again when Ruth was born. He retyurned to Lebanon about 1736, residing in the northern part of town, now Columbia, where he was mentioned as a church member. 2-12-1744/5 he sold 564 acres of land in Lebanon to Daniel Smalley of Barnstable, MA, and in the deed he was called Capt. James Smalley. His name then disappears from Lebanon records and his later history is uncertain. According to Cole records, it was about this time that he removed to Kent, Dutchess Co., NY, possibly without his family at first. His family seemed to be in Norwich, CT where church records mention the baptism of his sons- William Smalley, 2-9-1745/6 (no father's name given) and Elias, son of Widow Smalleyk bp. 10-28-1750. Records refer to him as dying in 1750- perhaps at Norwich. Widow Smalley m2. a Byington or Boyington (no date given) and m3. 5-22-1777 Capt. Daniel Smalley. He d. in 1781 at Lebanon and Hannah went to Greenfield, MA to live with her son William and d. in Oct. 1793.
