Irene Evelyn's father was Ernest Carl Selbrede and her mother was Eleanor Mattie Betts.  Her paternal grandparents were Fredrich Selbrede and Maria Piske; her maternal grandparents were Ernest Betts and Cora Steffens. She had three brothers and a sister, named Duane Ernest, Living, Living and Dorothy Ellen.
