John was born on April 28th, 1888 in Wilmington, California.1   John's father was Joaquin Ross and his mother was Maria Sylvia. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Joaquin, Frank, Mary Elizabeth, Emily Cecilia, Ida Estelle and Eva Modesta.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.1
