John was born on February 10th, 1837 in Milan, Erie, Ohio.1   John's father was Hyrum Root and his mother was Parthena Tillotson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Orrin, Caleb, Henry G., Eunice Ann, Eliza R., Mary Rosabel, Helen M. and Unknown.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.1
