John was born on December 24th, 1867 in Logansport, Cass, INdiana.1   John's father was Peter Richard and his mother was Catherine Margaret Lolmaugh.  His maternal grandparents were Jacob Lolmaugh and Susanne J. Bowles. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Peter J., Jacob A., Andrew, John, Susan Or Susana, Mary, Magdalene, Angiline, Catharine and Emma.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.1
