Montgomery was born about 1838.1   Montgomery's father was Isaac Remington and his mother was Elizabeth M. Sherry.  His paternal grandfather was Jacob Remington. He had two brothers and a sister, named William M., Hugh Sherry and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the four children.1
