Meale's father was Tom Nichols and her mother was Catherine Setter.  Her maternal grandparents were Jacob Setter and Catharine Klein. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Clarence, Lloyd, Tom, Walt, Elizabeth, Maggie and Pearl.
