His paternal grandparents were Hugh Mosher and Lydia Maxson; his maternal grandparents were Richard Maxon and Rebecca Unknown. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Nicholas, John, Joseph, James, Ann, Hannah, Mary and Rebecca. He was the third oldest of the nine children.-
