  Joseph Loomis (1590-1658) came from Braintree, County Essex, England in the 'Susan and Ellen' in 1638 to Boston, Mass.  He moved to Dorchester, Mass where he remained for a year, then settled on 'The Island' at Windsor, Conn in 1639.  He was granted land in 1640, was a deputy to the General Court in 1643 and 1644.  He was a woolen and linen draper.

  This is 'THE' Joseph Loomis.  The Emigrant from England.  Along with his wife, Mary White, he brought to America his five sons and three daughters.

  Joseph Loomis:
  Woolen draper in Braintree, Essex Co., England. Sailed from London 11 Apr 1638 aboard the "Susan and Ellen" arrived at Boston, Massachusetts 17 Jul 1638. Was granted 21 acres by Windsor . Plantation (known as The Island because it became one every time the Connecticut River overflowed) adjoining west side of Farmingham River. Accompanied Rev. Ephraim Hurst, who settled in Windsor 17 Aug 1639. Brought with him a wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters.  The origin of the family Loomis (typically Lomas in England) is probably around Manchester and Chester, Derby and Stafford counties. The origin of the name Lommis is probably Spanish. The family probably came from Spain about the year 1400. Lomas means "hills" in Spanish.  Two coats of family arms exist, one for Lomax, one for Lomas.  President Millard Fillmore descends from Joseph and Mary.[20;1754.FTW]

     Joseph Loomis was a woolen-draper in Braintree, Essexshire, England.   He sailed from London,  April 11, 1638, on the ship, "Susan and Ellen" and arrived in Boston July 17, 1638.   It is mentioned in the town records of Windsor, CT, that on February 2, 1640 he was granted 21 acres adjoining the Farmington River on the west side of the Connecticut River from the Plantation.   He was also granted several large tracts of land on the east side of the Connecticut River, partly from the town of Windsor and partly by purchase.   He is generally supposed to have come in the company of Rev. Ephraim Huet, who arrived at Windsor on August 17, 1639.    He brought with him five sons and three daughters.   His house was situated near the mouth of the Farmington River on the "Island", so called because at every freshet it became temporarily an island by the overflowing of the Connecticut River.
