Martha was born in 1833 in Wayne, Kentucky.1   Martha's father was John C Hurt and her mother was Frances Unknown. She had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Joshua, Samuel, Moses, Ruben, Milly, Mary and Saphrona.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.1
