Herbert was born in 1860.1   Herbert's father was Olof Hultgren and his mother was Willhelena Nyquist. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Ossian, Hjalmar, Gerda, Hilma Genevieve, Olga, Kolma and Dagmar.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.1
