Elise Marie was born in 1866 in Westphalia Township, Clinton County, Michigan.  Elise Marie's father was Henrich Hopp and her mother was Dorothea Unknown. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Theodor Christoph Johann, Johann Christian Carl, Mary, Caroline, Dorothea Wilhelmine Friedericka and Auguste Christiane Dorothea.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
