In 1732 John Holmes and wife Sarah of Marshfield; Samuel Sprague and wife Bethiah; John, Samuel, Nathan, Joseph and Gideon Thomas sold land to Ichabod Samson.
No Plymouth County probate record for John Holmes has been found.
Note: There were no fewer than seven John Holmeses living in the vicinity of Plymouth about this time, four of whom married women named Sarah, including two named sarah Thomas.
Distinguishing these families has been difficult. However, Stratton has assembled convincing evidence that eliminates several John Holmeses as descedants of Desire Doty.
Two John Holmeses were born in Marshfield within three years of each other: John, the son of Israel and Desire, born June 15, 1684; and John, son of Samuel and Mary, born November 18, 1686. Only one John Homes remained in marshfield to marry and produce children. since the will of Desire Standish dated June 30, 1723 shows that her son John Holmes was still living, and since there is no known record of Samuel Holmes' son John following his birth, the Children born in Marshfield to John and Sarah Holmes are probably the grandchildren of Desire Doty (Edward).
